Jiumenkou Water Great Wall (National 4-A Scenic Spot)

Update:10/16/2019 Source:hld.gov.cn

Jiumenkou Water Great Wall Scenic Spot is located in Xintaizi Village, Lijia Township, Suizhong County, Huludao City, Liaoning Province. The scenic spot is 1,704 meters in length and is 15 kilometers from Shanhai Pass. It starts from steep cliffs in the south and connect with the Great Wall from the Shanhai Pass. Then the Great Wall stretches northward along the ridge to the south bank of Jiujiang River. The Great Wall stretches over the Jiujiang River which is nearly 100 meters wide to the mountains. The city bridge over the river is very huge. “A city is above water and water flows in the city”.

Jiumenkou was once called A Stone in ancient times. It was a bottle neck between the capital city and Fengtian before the Ming Dynasty. In the 14th year in the reign of Hongwu, Taizu Emperor (Zhu Yuanzhang) of the Ming Dynasty (1381), General Xu Da was in charge of building the Jizhen Great Wall. After the Great Wall was built, A Stone Pass was replaced by Jiumenkou Pass, which became a very important pass connecting the area inside the Shanhai Pass with the Northern China. The famous A Stone Battle between the peasant uprising troops led by Li Zicheng in late Ming Dynasty and the Qing troops guided by Wu Sangui took place here in 1644. Zhi Warlords and Feng Warlords fought here from 1922 to 1924. During the War of Liberation, the People’s Liberation Army also fought fiercely in the Jiumen Valley. Jiumenkou Great Wall is very famous for the battles in history. It is a National Key Cultural Relics Conservation Site. Liaoning Jiumenkou Great Wall, the only water Great Wall in China, passed the acceptance of UNESCO in November 2002 to be listed as a world cultural heritage officially as a part of the Great Wall.

The bridge over the Jiujiang River is very unique. The eight shuttle piers wrapped in huge stones divide the 100-meter wide river into nine water gates. The upper part of the bridge is the city wall like other parts of the Great Wall. The riverbed of the river under the bridge is paved with large stones. The iron waists clench the stones together. The riverbed is regular and flat like a whole piece of stone so Jiumenkou Great Wall is also called A Stone Pass. Local people have proverbs describing the dangerous terrain, which is easy to defend and difficult to attack, “One gate fewer than ten,/Each gate kills men./Those who want to get through even one gate,/nine in ten will lose their lives.”

Jiumenkou Great Wall was named for the nine water gates under the city bridge. The water flows into Bohai Sea from west to east. It is a perfect combination of magnificent and spectacular natural and cultural landscapes. It enjoys the reputation of Water Great Wall. It was listed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 2002
