Turbot Fish of Caozhuang Town, Xingcheng City

Update:10/16/2019 Source:hld.gov.cn

Turbot fish, commonly known as flounder, is native to the Atlantic Ocean. Turbot fish is famous for its rich nutrition and delicious taste. It was introduced into China by Academician Lei Jilin in 1992. The fish was renamed to be “Duobao Fish”, which means auspiciousness. In 2001, Turbot fish was brought to Caozhuang Town, a coastal town in Xingcheng City.

Caozhuang Town Modern Fishery Park is one of the first six modern fishery parks in our province. It is also the largest turbot fish farming base in our province at present. The base has 450 factory turbot fish farmers and the whole farming area is 1.7 million square meters. The base produces 25,000 tons of turbot fish and the annual output is one billion yuan. The annual output accounts for 58% of the total in China,  which accounts for about half of the national production of flounder farming. Xingcheng Turbot Fish has been successfully registered as a National Geographic Indicator Certified Trademark. It was listed as a designated aquatic product for the Olympic Games in 2008, a designated aquatic product for Shanghai World Expo in 2009 and a designated aquatic product for Tianjin National Games in 2013. In 2013, Caozhuang Town was awarded as the hometown of turbot specialty in Liaoning Province.

The subcutaneous and fin edges of turbot fish are rich in glia. The rich and tender fish tastes smooth and moist. The high content of glial protein makes the fish have good effects on skin, kidney, brain, yang promotion, stomach eyes. There are also plenty of dishes based on turbot fish, like Steamed Flounder Fish, Stewed Flounder Fish & Tofu, Braised Flounder Fish, New Orleans Roasted Flounder Fish, etc. The quality, reputation and other characteristics of the turbot fish produced in Caozhuang Town depend on the natural and human factors of its origin. Xingcheng City is located at 40.4 degrees north latitude, and its geographical location is unique. There is abundant natural well saltwater from the underground aquifers, which provides a growth environment close to the original ecosystem for the turbot fish farming in Caozhuang Town. The average annual temperature is about 6-19 C. Each dobby fish should spend at least one cold winter in Caozhuang Town. Due to the low water temperature and high salinity, the growth cycle of the fish is as long as18-24 months. However, the growth cycle of turbot fish in other cultured areas in China is 9-12 months. Therefore, the turbot fish produced in Caozhuang Town has higher quality and better taste.

With the rapid development of industrialized turbot fish farming, Caozhuang town has focused on the quality and safety of aquatic products. With the help of the traceability system of aquatic product quality and safety established by them, the whole process monitoring from seedling to aquaculture product sales has been realized. Especially the disposable aquatic clamp with anti-counterfeiting function and two-dimensional code traceability system developed by Jiayingweiye Commercial and Trade Co., Ltd. is an innovation of digital quality and safety supervision in aquatic products industry. Nowadays, Xingcheng Turbot Fish has been widely recognized as a popular delicacy on the dining table of the people.
